Can you help keep your customers safe? Can you help relieve the extreme pressure on local Mountain Rescue Teams?
Llanberis has the busiest Mountain Rescue Team in the UK. In 2024 the Team responded to over 350 incidents. The physical and mental stress on this wholly voluntary organisation is acute, and they are reaching the point at which their ability to cope with the increasing pressure of call outs is under threat.
Unfortunately, data shows that there are an ever-increasing number of avoidable incidents. Every year more and more people head to North Wales to climb mountains, but many are wholly unprepared. In an attempt to tackle this, several organisations, including Eryri National Park Authority, North Wales Police, Mountain Rescue and Cyngor Gwynedd, are working together to pilot a project called Yr Wyddfa AdventureSmart Champions.
Many of the people climbing Yr Wyddfa pass through businesses; staying in accommodation, visiting retailers and eating in restaurants and cafes – this is an optimal time to influence peoples choices. Businesses are considered to be trusted voices and regional experts, the conversations people have with you could be the last they have before setting off into the hills. We want to work with hospitality businesses in the Yr Wyddfa area to support you and your staff to actively promote safety messages to customers.
Our aim is to increase the confidence of all those who come into contact with walkers heading for Yr Wyddfa – to be able to give core advice and safety messages. Your conversation over breakfast or a cuppa could make a huge difference.
If you believe you can make a difference, we invite you to join us at an in-person session in Galeri, Caernarfon,
on 13th February from 10:30am to 13:30pm. With spaces limited to just 30 participants, this is a fantastic opportunity to play a vital role in promoting safety and helping protect lives.Yr Wyddfa AdventureSmart Champions: In-Person Event
