Last summer saw record visitor numbers across the UK’s tourist attractions as the Covid-19 pandemic resulted in a massive increase in staycations for holidaymakers. This included Snowdonia National Park. The resultant rush of visitors caused a number of parking and overcrowding problems, particularly at the main Pen y Pass car park.

The Snowdonia National Park team are determined not to let this happen again in 2021 as the UK comes out of lockdown for, hopefully, the last time. They understood that part of the solution to controlling overall numbers would come from managing the number of cars coming to their locations looking for a place to park.

The team looked for car park booking solutions that could very quickly and easily be put in place with no need for new on site infrastructure. This led them to JustPark’s online pre-book solution.

From April 8th to November 8th 2021 any drivers wishing to park at Pen y Pass car park now need to use the JustPark app or website to pre book their visit at least 24 hours in advance. If the car park is full then they will be encouraged to use the Park and Ride facilities at Nant Peris and Llanberis to access Pen y Pass.

As the solution utilises the established JustPark platform, the set up time took only a few weeks, ensuring the car park was live and ready for bookings from the Easter weekend onwards.

Anthony Eskinazi, CEO and founder of JustPark said

“With the anticipated huge demand for staycation breaks through the summer of 2021 it’s fantastic to see that we can help important tourist attractions such as Snowdonia National Park keep their visitor numbers under control and therefore contribute to keeping people as safe as possible.”

Angela Jones, National Parks Partnerships Manager from Snowdonia National Park added

“This is part of long term plans for an ambitious and sustainable new approach to parking and transport in northern Snowdonia. The proposals outline how traffic, pollution and noise could be greatly reduced in the inner area during high season, whilst vastly improving the visitor experience.

This development is in line with – and reinforces – one of Snowdonia National Park Authority’s core messages for the season, to plan in advance and highlights the other sustainable modes of transport on offer when visiting Yr Wyddfa.”

Tourist destinations across the country are increasingly looking for quick and easy to implement car parking solutions to help them control numbers and increase safety. Last summer JustPark worked with the West Wittering Estate to install a similar solution for their beach car parks. The pre book and cashless system won industry awards as it led to increased control of visitor numbers to the popular West Sussex location.
