Llyn Cwellyn is a 120ft deep reservoir near the village of Rhyd Ddu. It supplies drinking water to parts of Gwynedd and Anglesey. On its eastern shore are the foothills of Mynydd Mawr, an area that is now considered a nature reserve. Moel Eilio rises to the west.
A stone’s throw to the south from Llyn Cwellyn is the small village of Rhyd Ddu. Lôn Gwyrfai, another route promoted by the National Park Authority, can be accessed from the village. The route is another fantastic accessible path in the National Park that stretches all the way to Beddgelert.
To the north of Llyn Cwellyn, along the foothills of Moel Eilio, runs the Welsh Highland Railway. This narrow-gauge heritage railway operates between Caernarfon and Porthmadog and offers some of the best views in Eryri.
